The Cycle of Change: What You Need to Know
Learn the predictable phases of change, navigate from discontent to becoming, and discover the power to reshape your identity.
Today we're diving into a topic that could change the trajectory of your life.
If you've ever found yourself stuck in a seemingly endless cycle, going around the same mountain over and over, this year is your year to break free.
I genuinely believe it's going to be a groundbreaking year for you – a year of transformation and breakthroughs.
Let's explore the principles that can help you leverage the biology and psychology at play when you decide to embark on something new. Did you know there's a predictable path, a common cycle that unfolds when you decide to make a significant change in your life?
A few years back, I had a heart-to-heart with a dear friend, Sue, on a sunny afternoon. She was at a breaking point, feeling depressed, discouraged, and powerless. Fast forward four months, and I was astonished at the positive changes in her life.
Now, let's talk about you. Are you caught in the cycle of circling the same mountain repeatedly, expecting different results? As the saying goes, if you want something you've never had, you must do something you've never done. But first, let's understand the journey you embark on when you declare, "I want to change."
Here are the 5 phases in the cycle of change, and see if you recognize yourself in any of them:
Phase 1: Discontent
In this stage, you've grown exceedingly discontent, unhappy, and dissatisfied. You know something in your life has to change, but familiarity keeps you stuck. Familiar doesn't equal safe; it might be dangerous. The turning point comes when the pain of staying the same becomes greater than the fear of change.
Phase 2: Behold the Vision
This is your "I've had enough" moment. You can articulate what you don't want because you subconsciously believe something better is possible. You start to behold the vision, picturing yourself conquering goals and living a transformed life.
Phase 3: Beginning Backbone
With uninformed optimism, you're excited and motivated to change. It feels simple, and you experience joy, excitement, and eagerness. Take this moment to connect with your "why" – the reasons behind your desire for change.
Phase 4: Beliefs and Barriers
Awareness of the costs sets in, and doubt creeps in. Pessimism challenges your resolve, and you may feel confused or anxious. This is a deceptive phase, leading to the realm of habits.
Phase 5: Discomfort
Entering the realm of transformation, you face resistance. Discomfort signifies you're breaking old habits and creating new neural pathways. You're rewiring your brain, teaching it to embrace change.
Remember, discomfort doesn't mean comfort; it signifies transformation. Affirm your new identity, and press through the resistance.
To make it through this cycle, understand the psychological changes, lies, rationalizations, and self-sabotage. Recognize where you are emotionally, and press through the discomfort to become the person you envision.
Don't go it alone – very few make it through the cycle solo. If you're looping back into a cycle of defeat, it's time to navigate the psychological changes. Visit braveheartedwoman/resources for a journaling tool that can hold you accountable to your goals.
